History of The Farm at Woodridge

In the historical document, Ledger 39, which provides a record of early Colorado homestead patents, Joseph Martin Mumford Jr. is listed as having filed his homestead patent for eighty acres of land on March 24, 1882. Mumford's homestead included a part of the farm which is today known as 13103 North 107th Street.

The St. Vrain Historical Associations' centennial history of Longmont, titled They Came to Stay, gives a detailed biography of the Mumford family. Joseph Mumford, Jr. was one of three children born to Joseph Martin Mumford and Margaret J. Mumford, the others being his sister, Ida Emma (Hall), and brother William Francis Mumford. The three Mumford men first arrived in Burlington in January 1871. They had traveled from New Bedford, Massachusetts, in search of a better climate for William Francis, who suffered from tuberculosis. A homestead was chosen three miles north on land originally belonging to the Chicago Colony, upon which they built a house much like their residence back home. Once the house was completed, Joseph Jr. returned east to accompany his mother, sister, and his brother's wife and child on their trip to Colorado. William Francis' wife was Nellie Chandler Mumford, and their son was christened Joseph Chandler Mumford. At age 22, only three weeks after the family was reunited, William died.

After her husband's death Nellie Mumford homesteaded land northeast of Longmont. She remarried, becoming Mrs. George Hooker Hall. Her son, Joseph Chandler Mumford, grew up on the farm. Upon his grandfather's death Joseph Chandler inherited land under Homestead Certificate No. 3523. Located two miles north of Longmont, near the intersection of US Highway 287 and Colorado Highway 66, the property became a local landmark known as Mumford Corner.

The property at 13103 North 107th Street, located to the north of Mumford Corner changed hands several times from some time before 1892 until the early 1970s when the land was purchased by Floyd R. ("Bob") Wood. Upon his death the land came into the ownership of his wife, Bessie Wood. The Wood family still owns 160 acres of land there which is used to raise horses and to grow hay.
